I find myself including Clary Sage (Salvia sclaria) essential oil a lot in my massage and cream blends this month. So it just has to be January’s essential oil of the month. A sacred herb to the ancient Roman civilisation; the oil is extracted from the hardy evergreen shrub, native to southern Europe. The English name “Clary” comes from the Latin word clarus – meaning clear, whilst the name of the genus “Salvia” comes from the latin word salvere – meaning to save or heal.
Clary Sage is one of the most important of aromatics used in Aromatherapy and, unlike essential oil of common Sage, is completely safe to use in normal doses. In relation to Oriental medicine, Clary Sage strengthens our natural defenses when depleted and improves the flow of subtle energy that flows through our bodies, when it becomes stuck. So if we focus on its therapeutic actions: regulating, antispasmodic, analgesic, neurotonic; it is really useful when treating painful conditions such as: irritable bowel syndrome, headache/migraine, PMT, menstrual pain, dull pain during labour, asthma.
Similarly, but on an emotional level, Clary Sage gives us the right balance between stimulation and relaxation, which makes it a wonderful aid where there is depression, restlessness, nervous tension and exhaustion – which often show as mood swings, irritability, indecision and general emotional confusion. It helps us focus and see things clearly in the here and now, which can lead to a revitalization of Mind and Body, allowing the flow of inspiration and intuitive insight.
